December 8, 2020 : The height of the highest peak, Mount Everest, has increased by 86 cm. The new height of Mount Everest announced on Tuesday is 8848.86 meters. Earlier, the height of Everest was 8848 meters.

The government of Nepal and the Chinese government team measured the height of Mount Everest separately and submitted the report to the technicians on both sides. Foreign Minister Pradip Kumar Gyawali, along with a team from the Ministry of Land Reforms at the Department of Surveying and Mapping, and a Chinese team in China jointly unveiled the new height on Tuesday.

For the first time, it has been made public by measuring the height of Everest by its own technical team. The department had completed the measurement of Everest in a period of two years at a cost of Rs 130 million. This is the first time that Nepal has measured the height of Mount Everest with its own resources after an international debate began on whether the height of Mount Everest may have decreased after the 2072 BS earthquake.

Everest was first climbed in 1849 under the leadership of George Everest. Everest is named after the English name of Everest. From 1849 to 1855, the height of Everest was measured by trigonometric method from Dehradun and Sonakhoda in Bihar.

In 1954, a survey conducted by the Survey of India from Bihar showed that the height of Everest was 8,848 meters. Even though everyone has been considering this height, there has been no consensus between China and Nepal on the height of Everest lately. During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Nepal last year, China agreed to jointly declare the height of Mount Everest.
