Colombo, 15 December. Eight people have been killed in riots at a prison on the outskirts of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, all the people killed in the riots were prisoners. Another 45 people have been injured in the riots. Among the injured are security personnel.


As the corona virus outbreak began to increase in the prisons, the inmates protested demanding their release on bail and additional services. Inmates at the Velikada prison in the capital, Colombo, climbed onto the roof and staged a protest demanding their release on bail.

At least eight people were killed and 45 others were injured in a scuffle between inmates and prison guards. About 1,000 people have been confirmed infected with the corona virus in Sri Lankan prisons so far.


Police Spokesperson Ajit Rohna said that they had to use force to control the riot which started by the inmates. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital, said police spokesperson Rohna.

Rohana also said that a team of specially trained commandos has been deployed to increase security in the prison. In Sri Lanka, more than 23,400 people have been infected with Covid-19 since the onset of corona, and 116 people have died from the infection. Sinhawa
