Gosaikunda is a famous name for the purest holy lake, which is situated in Rasuwa district of Nepal, covering a surface about 13.8 ha(34 acers). It lies between Helambu , Langtang Valley and Langtang National Park, which is 43 km far from Kathmandu city. It lies on the height of 4,380meters high from the sea level, which is also known as the sacred lake in Nepalese society because of the historical belief that connects to the Lord Shiva, the God of power and destruction in Hindu mythology. It is believed that, the Lord Shiva took a bath in this lake while he was on the meditation for several years in Himalaya of Nepal and Tibet for acquiring purity of soul. On the month of Shrawan , on the festival of Janai-Purnima, people of Nepal celebrate this festival in Gosaikunda lake. There attend a religious mela (Nepali Carnival) by Hindus and do celebrate with the Buddhist community as well. This place seems to be filled with the Hindus devotees as well as Buddhists.

         On this day, all the Hindu devotees take a bath and pray to Lord Shiva and change their Janais-the sacred thread worn around the body or on the wrist by the Hindu Brahmins. They believe that taking bath on this lake washes away the sin, sorrow and the pain with the pure water of this lake. It is also believed that this Gosaikunda Lake was created by the Lord Shiva Trishula (Trident) when he thrust his Trishula into the mountain to extract water to claim over his poisoning throat. There is a large rock at the center of the lake, which is said to be the remains of the Shiva shrine and also believed that people with pure soul can see the reflection of Lord Shiva lying under the water. According to the Hindus scriptures Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana and the epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana refers to the origin of Gosaikunda and has explained so well. There are 108 Kundas (Lakes) around this area. Among them Saraswati Kunda,Bhairab Kunda, Surya Kunda, Naga Kunda and Gosaikunda (Lakes) are the famous lake among the Pilgrimage.Hindu devotees from Nepal and India come to take holy dip in this lake once in every year. October to June the water of this lake gets frozen. Gosaikunda is the main spring of Trishuli River after it gets melted.

            Gosaikunda is not only famous for Hindu and Buddhists but it is also famous for tourism and trekking destination. The trekking of Gosaikunda begin from the Dhunche. We can see the views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal as well as sunset and sun rise from the Laurebinayak, which is on the way to Gosaikunda. There lies Langtang national Park, Manaslu and Annapurna massif with the great views. We also can see the traditional and culture of Tamang races. We can take the full advantages of natural beauties on the way and can see much abundant wildlife such as red panda, musk deer and several species of birds with the forest greenery. The route is rich in Flora and Fauna. If the trekking is done in March to April, we can see at least 16 different species of Rhododendron. September to November and March to May are the main trekking seasons in this region. There are some tea houses where we can find variety of food and snacks. There are only 14 hotels on the way to Gosaikunda and availability room are few during the trekking seasons, so it would be better to be prepared to pitch a tent camp. The trekking will be the best in your life, if you are a real nature lover.
