December 29, 2020 : The production of oranges has come down in the district this year due to hail during the flowering season. Nawalparasi (East of Bardaghat Susta) Nawalpur has witnessed a decline in orange production this year.

Orange production has declined due to hailstorm in April last year. Chief Senior Agriculture Officer Bishnu Prasad Sharma of the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Modernization Project Orange Variety Fruit Zone Program Nawalpur said that the production has decreased due to hail damage to the plants.

About 20,000 tonnes of oranges have been produced in Nawalpur this year. Last year, 22,038 tonnes of oranges were produced in the district. Sharma informed that the production of oranges has decreased by about 10 percent this year. It is estimated that about Rs 80 million will be transacted from the sale of oranges this year. Last year, the district had earned Rs 90 million from the sale of oranges.

Last year, farmers sold at an average wholesale price of Rs 30 to 40 per kg. The price of oranges has not dropped much this year. This year, farmers are selling at an average price of Rs 50 to 60 per kg, Sharma said. He said that despite the decline in production due to increase in prices this year, there has not been much difference in income.

A 10-year zone project has been started from the Fiscal Year 2075-76 BS to increase the commercial production of orange fruits in the hilly areas of the district.

The program has been implemented in Bulingtar Municipality, Wards No. 4, 5 and 6 of Baudikali Municipality, Devachuli Municipality-6, Gaindakot Municipality-18 and Hupsekot Municipality-5. Though there is an orange orchard in the area of 531 hectares, the productive area is only 181 hectares, said Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project Chief Sharma.

Under the project, programs of group, cooperative updating, orchard management, expansion of 100 hectare area, irrigation and herd improvement are being carried out. At present, construction work of orange and lemon nurseries has been started in two places of the district.

The construction of lemon nursery in the center of the district and orange nursery in Baudikali has been started from this year as the seedlings die due to the cost of importing orange and lemon seedlings, said Sharma.
